Venture investors deployed $42 billion across just over 1,500 startups worldwide in August, Crunchbase data shows. While down 25% from July's $56 billion, the total represents a 122% increase compared to August 2025. Seven companies secured billion-dollar funding rounds, matching the year's second-highest monthly count. The largest deal went to Databricks, which raised $5 billion at a $190 billion valuation.

Other billion-dollar recipients spanned diverse sectors: defense tech startup Hadrian; River AI, which performs custom AI fine-tuning; low-orbit satellite network Yuanxin Satellite; nuclear energy company Valar Atomics; automated coding provider Poolside; and home battery service Base Power. This breadth highlights technology's expanding impact on traditional industries like manufacturing, defense, aerospace, and energy.

On the exit front, Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics went public on Aug. 19 at a ~$9 billion valuation, soaring 460% on its Shanghai Stock Exchange debut. The largest M&A news was Nvidia's plan to acquire open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Milan-based Bending Spoons also announced plans to acquire database company Airtable for ~$1.3 billion.

Capital concentration is accelerating. Databricks added $56 billion to its valuation in six months, while River AI amassed $1.1 billion in early-stage funding this year alone. Five of August's seven megadeal recipients had raised capital within the prior 12 months, underscoring investors' rapid doubling down on perceived future tech giants.
