Venture funding into fintech startups slid 21.4% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, while deal count fell nearly 31%, according to Crunchbase data. The decline points to a narrower funding market with fewer rounds and continued reliance on large transactions. Fintech startups raised $10.6 billion globally in Q3 2026, down 28.4% from $14.9 billion in Q2 2026 and 21.4% from $13.5 billion in Q3 2025.

Investors are drawing sharper distinctions between companies attracting capital and those struggling to raise. QED Investors partner Laura Bock said, "The market remains bifurcated — AI vs. not and market leaders vs. not." Forerunner founder Kirsten Green described capital concentrating in fewer, larger rounds, with infrastructure, payments and stablecoin rails attracting interest, supported by greater regulatory clarity. Deal count in Q3 was the lowest in the period covered by the analysis, dating back to the first quarter of 2018, with just 687 rounds recorded globally.

Green said investors now demand stronger evidence of performance before writing checks. For Series A and B rounds, "evidence counts for more than narrative." More startups are also combining debt and equity to limit dilution.

The quarter-over-quarter decline was driven largely by a pullback in large rounds. Funding from rounds of at least $100 million fell 43.3%, from $9.07 billion in Q2 to $5.15 billion in Q3, accounting for roughly 93% of the overall dollar decline. The United States remained the largest market, attracting $5.38 billion, or 50.5% of the global total, while Singapore's total was heavily concentrated in Ant International's $1.2 billion round.
