iPhone Duo and Hardware Roadmap

Apple's foldable ambitions are taking clearer shape. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggests the company will release an "iPhone Duo Max" with a larger display explaining why Apple settled on the "Duo" moniker rather than a conventional name. A separate report predicts Apple wants to replace the Duo's Touch ID with Face ID as soon as possible, and suggests Apple Intelligence could be the key to fitting the True Depth system into the thinner chassis. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, addressed the iPhone Duo vs. iPad overlap in an interview with MKBHD this week, defending the product's positioning against the company's tablet line.

Software and Services

iOS 27 arrives Monday with eight major features, following Apple's iPhone 18 Pro event last week where the release date was confirmed. On the security side, Apple's changes to Keychain in macOS Tahoe made it more secure, but by binding it to device-specific Secure Enclave keys, the mac OS Tahoe 26.4 update now stops users from copying their login Keychain. Apple reportedly held back new Apple TV hardware until its Apple Intelligence upgrades were ready, meaning an upgraded set-top box with Siri AI could launch at any time this fall.

Accessories and Peripherals

Apple is designing its own game controllers for iPhone, with Gurman corroborating the effort and pointing to a possible Beats branding. Two unreleased Apple game controllers were recently spotted in macOS code, reinforcing that the accessories will likely come from Beats. Air Pods 5 are now available for pre-order at $129 on Amazon, while older Air Pods models are discounted by up to $100 this weekend. A retro-style dock for the Mac mini and Mac Studio has also launched, adding a flip-up display and Thunderbolt 5 plus 8TB of storage.

Apple is accelerating its store refurbishment program, pushing Genius Bar and pickup table updates to more locations faster. In this week's Sunday Reboot, the Apple Event rolled on as expected, but while it was his first big show as CEO, John Ternus had a muted presence as the event's static structure went unchanged.

Microsoft Windows 11 and Office for Mac licenses are heavily discounted this weekend, with prices dipping to as low as $9.97, savings of up to 94 percent on Windows 11 and Office Home 2024. Elsewhere, the first iPod touch went on general sale on September 14, 2007, nine days after Steve Jobs unveiled it at Apple's "The Beat Goes On" media event, bringing the iPhone's multi-touch interface to a device without phone capabilities.
