United States legend and Charlotte FC defender Tim Ream has officially retired from the national team. Ream, 38, made the announcement Tuesday before the USMNT's friendly against Chile at Energizer Stadium in St. Louis, as part of a tribute to his career. He ends his international career with 86 caps — 33 as captain — over his 16-year career.

"It wasn't a difficult decision. You make it to a home World Cup, you get to captain the team. What else is there at almost [age 39]?" he said on the TNT broadcast. "For me, it was an easy decision, and age is the biggest factor."

A product of the St. Louis soccer scene, Ream played youth soccer with St. Louis Scott Gallagher and collegiately at St. Louis University. Drafted 18th overall in the 2010 MLS Super Draft by the New York Red Bulls, he won MLS Rookie of the Year in 2010. He later played for Bolton Wanderers and Fulham FC, helping the Cottagers reach the Premier League three times and earning over 300 appearances.

Ream was a late addition to the 2022 World Cup roster and became captain before the 2026 World Cup. He was part of two U.S. Concacaf Nations League championship teams and scored his only international goal against Puerto Rico in 2016.
