FIFA president Gianni Infantino said he has "never been more determined and committed" to doing "what is right for the game" after pledging an independent review of the organisation's governance. Infantino faces criticism, particularly from UEFA, over plans for private investment in a commercial vehicle to run the World Cup and other FIFA competitions, first reported by The Times in July.

UEFA is seeking disclosure of documents through U.S. federal courts, with a possible criminal complaint in Switzerland if it is established that Infantino undervalued the commercial vehicle at $20 billion. FIFA has called the legal applications a "smear campaign," but Infantino responded by pledging reform of FIFA's governance framework.

The Press Association understands this has done little to satisfy those demanding answers about the private investor plan and FIFA's handling of the Folarin Balogun case. Infantino wrote on Instagram: "There must be a culture of dialogue, of listening to each other and respecting one another."

Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt, also a FIFA vice president, has written to Infantino calling for release of documents and intends to challenge him at the next FIFA Council meeting in Zurich on Oct. 15. Infantino has also been accused of "woefully inadequate" cooperation with a U.S. House Judiciary Committee probe into his relationship with Donald Trump. FIFA denied this, saying discussions were productive.

Infantino sent his social media post from Jeddah, meeting Saudi dignitaries. The Saudi federation is a potential key ally for Infantino's bid for a fourth presidential term, with Qatar also behind him. UEFA has pledged to find a credible candidate, with Nov. 18 the deadline for candidacies.
