SEATTLE -- The Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks are officially under new ownership. The Seahawks announced Thursday that the sale of the franchise from Paul Allen's estate to a group led by the Khosla family has closed. Vinod Khosla, wife Neeru Khosla and their son, Neal Khosla, are now the controlling owners. The NFL's other owners voted unanimously Aug. 26 to approve the $9.612 billion sale, the highest purchase price ever for an NFL team.

"We are honored and excited to begin this next chapter," the Khosla family said in a statement. "The Seahawks are known for their championship culture, winning football, and a deep connection to the 12s and the Pacific Northwest. We look forward to engaging with the Seattle community and building upon the legacy and traditions that make this franchise so special."

Vinod Khosla -- the co-founder of Sun Microsystems and founder of venture capital firm Khosla Ventures -- will have the title of chair. Neeru Khosla is listed as the controlling owner and president of the Seahawks Charitable Foundation, while Neal Khosla is listed as vice chair. The family will be formally introduced at a news conference next Wednesday at Lumen Field, where the Seahawks will open their season against the New England Patriots in a rematch of Super Bowl LX.

Responding to a tweet on Wednesday, Vinod Khosla said he would "love" to have Jody Allen raise the ceremonial 12 Flag before the game. Allen had controlled the team since her brother, Paul Allen -- the Microsoft co-founder who saved professional football in Seattle -- died in 2018. According to Thursday's announcement, the Seahawks' new ownership group also includes Mark Stevens, the Aramburuzabala family, Val Blavatnik, Sheryl Sokoloff, Gonzalo Hevia Baillères, Jesse van der Werf, Samir Kaul, Sunny Gupta, Nader Naini, Penny Pritzker, Carlyle and Dynasty Equity, and Sixth Street.
