The New England Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed to a record-setting four-year, $135 million extension, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The deal includes $102 million guaranteed, making Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, surpassing teammate Devon Witherspoon's $132 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks. Both players are represented by agent Reggie Johnson.

Gonzalez, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, posted 'THANK YOU LORD! PATS NATION LET S GO' on his Instagram story after finalizing the deal. The extension was completed less than 48 hours before the Patriots' regular-season opener against the Seahawks in a Super Bowl LX rematch. Gonzalez had been a full participant in training camp until suffering a lower leg injury on Aug. 10, but returned to practice on Aug. 24 and traveled to Seattle for Wednesday's game.

The contract negotiations had lingered for months, with Gonzalez expressing frustration on Aug. 25 that the situation remained unresolved. At the start of training camp, owner Robert Kraft confirmed the team had offered a deal to make Gonzalez the NFL's highest-paid cornerback. Gonzalez did not attend most of the voluntary offseason program and participated only in walkthrough drills during mandatory minicamp.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf consistently expressed their desire to retain Gonzalez. The 24-year-old cornerback has started all 34 regular-season games in his career, plus four postseason contests, recording four career interceptions.
