Apple May Change App Store to Boost Revenue

According to Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter, Apple is reportedly considering App Store changes to increase revenue and margins. The effort is driven by CEO John Ternus and services SVP Eddy Cue, and reportedly contributed to Phil Schiller's departure last week. Schiller, who oversaw the App Store as an Apple Fellow, opposed the moves, believing they would further irk developers and governments.

Potential changes include automating the manual app review process to cut costs, raising the $99/year developer membership fee, or charging large developers subscription fees based on traffic to offset infrastructure costs. Gurman notes that with developers spending $200/month on tools like Codex and Claude, Apple could likely increase its fees.

No specific changes have been announced, and the company has not commented publicly on the report.
