The Utah campus where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed is hosting a memorial on the anniversary of his assassination. Turning Point USA, the organization he founded, is holding the event at Utah Valley University in Orem. The university canceled classes and increased security, sparking debate among students.

Some plan to attend, calling Kirk a martyr for free speech, while others oppose the closure and want to move past the tragedy. Last September, Kirk was fatally shot during a speaking event by Tyler J. Robinson, a 23-year-old from southern Utah, who faces aggravated murder charges and could face the death penalty.

He has pleaded not guilty. The memorial will feature speakers Glenn Beck and Michael Knowles. Students for a Democratic Society plan to protest, criticizing the university for treating the event like a holiday.

Utah Valley University is conducting a security review and faces questions over building a permanent memorial. President Jon Anderson, new this month, plans to attend both the memorial and protest, promoting civil dialogue. The university will not close for future anniversaries.

Instead, it’s holding a day of service. Some students, like Ruby Olsen, who was present during the shooting, feel the campus is defined by the tragedy.
