Bob Chapek, Disney’s fired chief executive, publicly addresses his 2022 ouster for the first time in a new memoir, blaming a “relentless” sabotage campaign by Robert A. Iger, who both preceded and succeeded him. Chapek rejects any personal responsibility, writing, “The answer, again, is nothing.”

The book, “Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth,” is set to be published Tuesday by Gallery Books. Chapek embraces the mantle of “disrupter,” using the word or versions of it 30 times across 254 pages. He also seeks to reclaim his legacy, writing that “my legacy wasn’t memorialized in a positive way.”

Chapek likens Iger to a “sniper,” claiming Iger disparaged him in private conversations with Hollywood power brokers and Disney loyalists, questioning his judgment over pandemic-era movie releases. He portrays Iger as manipulative and egotistic, maneuvering to preserve authority after stepping down and then seizing back the top job. “I didn’t get a chance to finish what I started,” Chapek writes. “In truth, it pisses me off.”

Chapek also questions Iger’s abrupt exit in February 2020, floating a conspiratorial theory that Iger anticipated Covid-19’s arrival. He offers no evidence, and Disney has previously denied the pandemic played any role in Iger’s decision. A spokesman for Iger declined to comment.
