The U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln docked in Thailand on Wednesday, offering roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines their first significant break in over nine months. The nuclear-powered carrier deployed from San Diego before Thanksgiving to the Middle East, docking at Laem Chabang north of Pattaya.

Rear Adm. Robert E. Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, stated the stop provides a "well-deserved opportunity" to rest and recharge, underscoring the strong alliance between the United States and Thailand.

Pattaya, a city about 60 miles south of Bangkok known for nightlife, has served as R&R for American troops for decades. Local authorities imposed restrictions for this shore leave, banning parasailing, jet skiing, visits to certain areas, and consuming marijuana despite its legality in Thailand. During its deployment in the war in Iran, the Lincoln came under repeated missile and drone attacks but successfully shot all of them down, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed.

However, after Iranian attacks destroyed a major naval base in Bahrain, resupplying and repairs on the Lincoln became difficult. Last month, Democratic senators raised concerns about supply shortages, water contamination, plumbing issues, and the deteriorating mental health of the crew. The Lincoln is scheduled to depart for San Diego on Sunday after its stopover in Thailand, having been replaced in the Middle East by the U.S.S.
