At the FT Weekend Festival in London, I pitted my investment skills against Claude, an AI chatbot, on stage. My editor Nathan and FT expert Tom Ursell helped. Tom added a "skill" to Claude: "Build a model investment portfolio using traditional fund and portfolio management theory..." Claude's suggestions differed greatly from my current holdings.

It recommended 63% in equities versus my 82%, slashing my 30% UK exposure to 10%, halving Asia, and cutting Latin America to 3%. It dismissed my single UK gilt as too idiosyncratic. The AI was patronising, saying "Here are the trades I'd recommend in plain English." While AI can build models in minutes, my decades of experience still matter.
