John Lewis Loss Widens to £89M as Turnaround Falters

John Lewis Partnership Plc's loss widened in the first half due to higher costs and reduced consumer spending, undermining the British department store chain's turnaround efforts. The partnership, which operates John Lewis and Waitrose, reported a loss before tax and exceptional items of £89 million ($121 million) for the 26 weeks ended Aug. 1, compared with a £34 million loss a year earlier.

The increased losses reflect ongoing challenges in the retail sector, where consumers are reining in discretionary spending amid economic pressures. Despite strategic initiatives to improve performance, cost inflation and shifting shopper behavior have continued to weigh on results.

The partnership remains focused on its long-term restructuring plan, though near-term headwinds suggest progress may be slower than anticipated.
