BOE Bond Sales Slowdown Eases Repo Pressure

The Bank of England’s plans to slow the pace of its bond sales will ease pressure on repo operations and provide a tailwind for strained long-end gilts, according to a Barclays Plc strategist. The move has “created a very positive environment for long-dated gilt spreads and the long end of the curve by creating a genuine shortage of paper that is unlikely to be alleviated any time soon,” Barclays’ Moyeen Islam wrote in a note. The BOE is also “implicitly taking some of the operational pressure off its repo operations.
