Aaron Rai shot a six-under 66 to share the first-round lead with Sweden's Joakim Lagergren at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Rai, England's most recent major winner, made seven birdies with a lone bogey on the 16th. Lagergren, whose only DP World Tour win came in 2018, eagled the 12th.

Rory McIlroy was five under after 10 holes and in the lead but stumbled on the back nine. Errant driving and a water ball on his penultimate hole led to three bogeys in the final seven, leaving him at three under, three strokes back.

Ryan Gerard, Adam Scott, Nacho Elvira and Ludvig Aberg are at five under. Patrick Reed, the only player above McIlroy in the Race to Dubai standings, is among 12 players at four under, alongside Ryan Fox, Viktor Hovland and Robert Mac Intyre.

Jon Rahm struggled to a six-over 78, while Matt Fitzpatrick and his brother Alex are at level par.
