Kicker Charlie Smyth has been waived by the New Orleans Saints ahead of the new NFL season. Smyth, a former Gaelic footballer from Mayobridge in Northern Ireland, was the incumbent kicker entering pre-season after taking over from Blake Grupe in November. The 25-year-old converted 12 of 16 field goals and was perfect on 13 extra-point attempts as a starter last season.

However, after a mixed pre-season and increased competition, two-time All-Pro kicker Daniel Carlson was favored, kicking two field goals—including a 53-yard game-winner—in the Saints’ 27-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Despite the waiver, Smyth’s NFL journey may continue. As an NFL International Player Pathway (IPP) participant, he could remain on the Saints’ practice roster, as IPP players do not count toward the 16-player limit.

He may also sign with another team. Teams have until Monday at 17:00 BST to claim released players, after which practice squad signings can begin.
