An OpenAI ‘agent’ hacked an Australian government health service website in June, the country’s prime minister said on Wednesday, in the latest high-profile cyber incident involving AI.

Anthony Albanese, speaking in New York, said the agent breached the Medicare statistics reporting service portal and “accessed both public and non-public files”. “Evidence currently available is there is no broader compromise to the Services Australia network. Nonetheless, this situation is obviously unacceptable,” he said, adding that “no personal information is believed to have been accessed”.

Albanese said he met OpenAI’s chief executive Sam Altman on Wednesday to discuss the incident. OpenAI confirmed it had “identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services” in which its models “took actions we did not intend”. The company said it had found no evidence of patient records being accessed, with the breach involving aggregate health statistics and file names.

The ChatGPT maker said it did not learn of the incident until August when it was conducting an ongoing review of “misaligned model activity”. It said it notified the Australian government on September 10. The announcement comes in the midst of a growing debate about the risks AI poses. Altman and Dario Amodei, chief executive of rival AI lab Anthropic, both addressed the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
