OpenAI Brings Codex AI Coding Agent to Chrome With New Extension

OpenAI launched Codex for Chrome, a new extension that brings its AI coding agent directly into the browser on both Macs and PCs. The tool lets Codex test web apps, pull context from multiple tabs, and interact with DevTools without hijacking the browser from the user.

The company discovered that after adding Computer Use to the desktop app, most common workflows happened in the browser. The Chrome extension makes it faster and easier for Codex to handle browser-based tasks that plugins or APIs cannot manage.

Codex now has more than 4 million weekly active users, representing an 8x increase since the beginning of the year. The extension installs through the Codex Plugins menu and reflects OpenAI's broader push to make the tool useful for daily work beyond just developers.
