macOS 27 Drops Intel Mac Support: Which Models Are Affected

Apple confirmed during WWDC 2025 that macOS 27 will run exclusively on Apple silicon Macs, marking the end of major updates for Intel-based machines. The affected models include the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020), 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), 27-inch iMac (2020), and Mac Pro (2019). These Macs can still install macOS 26 Tahoe, but won't support the next major release.

The transition timeline extends through mid-2027, as Apple pledged three years of security updates for Intel Macs. macOS 27 will also be the final version to include the complete Rosetta translation layer, allowing Intel applications to run natively. Apple plans to maintain a stripped-down version afterward for legacy gaming titles that depend on Intel frameworks, giving developers time to migrate their software.

Users with compatible Intel hardware face a difficult choice: upgrade to newer M-series Macs or remain on older software indefinitely. While security patches will continue, missing out on new features could impact productivity and compatibility with modern applications. The move accelerates Apple's silicon transition but leaves some users behind.

This change reflects Apple's broader strategy to optimize performance and battery life for its own chips, pushing the ecosystem toward exclusive ARM-based computing.
