Apple's upcoming macOS 27 Golden Gate finally delivers native ultrawide display support, solving a long-standing frustration for Mac users with widescreen monitors. The update enables ultrawide displays to run at up to 5K resolution at 120Hz, matching the performance previously available only on standard aspect ratio screens.

Previously, Mac users with ultrawide setups had to accept limited native resolution options or constantly reconfigure their display layouts after each connection. Now, display arrangements automatically restore exactly as users left them, eliminating the manual setup routine that plagued many workflows.

This change addresses years of user complaints about macOS's inadequate handling of ultrawide monitors. Many professionals working with video editing, music production, and data analysis rely on these displays for productivity gains that were partially blocked by software limitations.

The update ships this fall for Apple silicon Macs only, marking the end of Intel Mac compatibility. Developers can access the beta now through Apple's developer portal.
