iOS 27 Lock Screen Upgrades: Five Changes Coming to Your iPhone

Apple unveiled iOS 27 at WWDC, bringing notable refinements to the iPhone Lock Screen beyond the headline Siri overhaul. These five additions give users more customization options for personalizing their device's appearance and behavior. The public beta arrives next month, with general availability this fall.

iOS 27 introduces an Apple Intelligence-powered wallpaper extension that intelligently expands cropped photos to fill the entire Lock Screen naturally. Users can avoid aggressive cropping when images don't match their iPhone's aspect ratio. A compact clock mode also debuts, moving the time to a smaller format in the top-right corner alongside widgets and date information. This contrasts sharply with iOS 26's stretched clock design.

Image Playground now supports AI-generated Lock Screen wallpapers through text descriptions, creating custom backgrounds tailored to individual style preferences. Meanwhile, a Liquid Glass opacity slider appears in Settings, letting users adjust translucency levels for better text legibility or background visibility across system elements.

Siri receives a complete visual redesign, replacing the previous edge-traced glow with a swirling orb that animates within the Dynamic Island. Responses now appear in a more focused interface surrounding this area rather than taking over the entire screen, making interactions feel more contained and purposeful.
