iOS 27 CarPlay Adds Video, Siri AI, EV Routing

Apple detailed eight new CarPlay features arriving with iOS 27, spanning video playback, a smarter Siri AI, audio upgrades, and deeper vehicle integration. The headline addition lets parked drivers browse and watch video on the in-car display via supported apps or AirPlay streaming; playback automatically switches to audio-only when the car shifts into drive. No automakers have committed to enabling the video framework yet.

Siri AI extends Apple Intelligence to the dashboard for hands-free task completion and conversational queries, with chat history syncing back to the iPhone for continuity. Audio apps gain a persistent mini-player showing artwork and controls, plus a scrubbable progress bar for podcasts and audiobooks. The interface also adopts 14 new wave-style wallpapers, larger content thumbnails, and Liquid Glass icons for Maps and Weather.

Navigation apps can now share route data with the vehicle so the car can cross-reference an EV's range and suggest charging stops. Apple says wireless CarPlay is more reliable, with sharper GPS accuracy and heading detection. Every app category can now integrate a standardized voice-control template, and natural-language search in Apple Maps lets drivers request routes that avoid tolls or highways.

All features require an iPhone running iOS 27, but Siri AI is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and newer models that support Apple Intelligence. The video and EV-routing capabilities hinge on automaker adoption, making the rollout timeline uncertain for current vehicle owners.
