iOS 27 App Icons Get Sharper Liquid Glass Treatment After Blurry iOS 26

Apple is overhauling its first-party app icons in iOS 27, directly addressing the blurriness and washed-out appearance that plagued last year's Liquid Glass redesign in iOS 26. Rather than abandoning the design language, the company is doubling down with multiple distinct glass layers built into each icon's artwork instead of a uniform overlay.

The new rendering pipeline creates sharper edges and more defined refractions by adding visual separation between layers. This approach makes artwork considerably more visible with higher contrast, transforming the glass effect from a dominant layer into a refined finish. Apple has also removed the gyroscopic specular highlight effect that caused optical illusions, with static highlights now positioned at icon edges instead of shifting dynamically.

Icon Composer received updates to support the multi-layer Liquid Glass workflow, adding annotation features for refraction effects and interactive previews. These icon improvements arrive as part of broader Liquid Glass refinements announced at WWDC 2026, which include a system-wide transparency slider and better material diffusion for readability.

Developer Andreas Storm noted the changes represent a significant upgrade despite some reservations about dark specular highlights. The revisions suggest Apple is iterating thoughtfully on its design language rather than abandoning it, which should ease user concerns while maintaining the distinctive aesthetic introduced last year.
