Free Dropbox Client Maestral Archived

Maestral, a popular open-source Dropbox client for Mac, has been retired by its maintainer, Sam Schott. Over seven years, Maestral offered a lightweight alternative to Dropbox's official client, praised for its simplicity, small size, and low memory usage. It synced local folders using Dropbox's APIs and allowed users to manage an unlimited number of accounts and devices, bypassing official Dropbox limitations.

Schott announced the project's archival on GitHub, stating it will be retired as of July 28, 2026. He cited a lack of time to invest in the project and his own move away from using Dropbox. While Maestral may continue to function for a period as long as its certificates remain valid, it will no longer receive active maintenance or updates.

The retirement means that unless another developer forks and takes over the project, Maestral will eventually cease to work. This leaves users who relied on its specific features or lightweight performance without an actively supported alternative, potentially forcing them back to the official, more resource-intensive Dropbox application or to seek other cloud storage solutions.
