Apple Watch Series 12 Rumors: Touch ID, New Chip Coming

Apple is preparing to launch the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 in September 2026, with watchOS 27 debuting at WWDC on June 8. A new Apple Watch SE won't arrive this year since the model was refreshed in 2025 and typically sees updates every two to three years.

The upcoming devices are rumored to include Touch ID fingerprint authentication built into the side button, according to leaked internal Apple code. This would let users unlock their watch with a fingerprint instead of entering a passcode. However, prominent analysts like Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo haven't confirmed this feature, so it's not guaranteed. After using the same S10 chip across the Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3, the new models will get a processor refresh - though it's unclear whether it'll be branded S11 or S12.

watchOS 27 will also bring a new Modular Ultra watch face variant currently exclusive to the Ultra line, plus additional Apple Intelligence features that work with iPhone 15 Pro and newer. Satellite capabilities are expanding too, with Apple Maps and Photos support for satellite messaging likely coming to the Apple Watch. Amazon's recent announcement that it plans to acquire Globalstar - the satellite company powering Apple's current satellite features - could affect future connectivity arrangements.
