Apple could unveil its long-rumored smart home display as soon as October, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his latest 'Power On' newsletter, Gurman narrows the launch window after previously stating the device was on track to arrive before the end of 2026. The device is expected to serve as a central interface for controlling accessories, communicating with household members, accessing media, and using Apple services.

Apple is reportedly testing the product extensively in employees' homes. References in Apple's software link a tabletop model to the internal designation 'J490' and a wall-mount version to 'J491', both identified in macOS Tahoe 26.7. The two versions will share a compact, square display—one with a base for desks or counters, the other for wall mounting.

The screen is expected to be smaller than many Amazon Echo Show models. Apple has developed a dedicated operating system built around Siri AI, drawing visual elements from iOS, tvOS, and watchOS. The interface will include a Home Screen, widgets, and selectable clock designs for glanceable information.

Users will be able to search across devices via Siri, retrieve shared media, locate photos, and request app actions. The display's camera will support video calls and recognize household members without Face ID depth sensing, enabling personalized information like appointments and notes. Other features include smart home controls, intercom, music and video playback, and access to Calendar, Notes, and Reminders.

An iPhone will be required for setup and certain features. Apple delayed the product due to unready Siri features, but the release of iOS 27 with Siri AI has largely resolved this. The home display would be among the first major new products under Apple COO John Ternus, with Apple positioning the iPhone as the mobile center and the display, Apple TV, and HomePod as the home hub.
