Apple likely drops iPad Ultra amid Pro sales slump

Apple appears to have scrapped plans for a foldable “iPad Ultra,” according to a Weibo leaker known as Instant Digital. The source listed the Apple Watch Ultra, M‑series Ultra chips, an iPhone Ultra and a MacBook Ultra with OLED screens, but explicitly left the iPad out, citing the iPad Pro’s weak market performance. The leaker says Apple has “no plans” for an iPad Ultra.

Sales data backs the skepticism. DSCC analyst Ross Young cut the 2024 iPad Pro forecast to 6.7 million units, down from a high of 10 million, after the 13‑inch model’s shipments were projected to tumble more than 50 % in Q3 and 90 % in Q4. Pricing—$999 for 11‑inch and $1,299 for 13‑inch—has deterred buyers who treat tablets as secondary devices.

Apple’s “Ultra” branding is already spread across watches, chips and upcoming iPhone and MacBook concepts, but the iPad Pro’s three‑year revenue decline to just 6.73 % of total sales makes an even pricier tablet hard to justify. Prototype foldable iPads weighed 3.5 lb and could have launched near $3,900, roughly triple the 13‑inch Pro’s start price, reinforcing doubts about market appetite.
