Apple just introduced its second-generation AirTag with upgraded features including 50% farther Precision Finding, enhanced Bluetooth range, and a 50% louder speaker. However, one highly anticipated feature failed to materialize: deeper integration with Apple's Vision Pro headset as part of its spatial computing ecosystem.

Back in August 2023, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the new AirTag would feature better Vision Pro integration, but the final product includes no such capability. While Apple could potentially add this functionality through visionOS 27 updates, the absence raises questions about the company's spatial computing strategy, especially given reports that Apple is deprioritizing the Vision Pro with no new headsets in active development.

The Vision Pro integration was supposed to be a key differentiator for the AirTag 2, following Kuo's prediction that the next-generation AirPods Pro would also feature infrared cameras for enhanced spatial audio experiences with Apple's headset. With both products falling short of these spatial computing promises, Apple's broader ecosystem strategy appears to be shifting focus away from the Vision Pro platform.
