Valve's Steam Machine Launches at $1049-$1349, Faces Supply Constraints

Valve has finally priced its long-delayed Steam Machine gaming PC, with the 512GB model at $1049 and the 2TB version at $1349 — both excluding the Steam Controller. Adding Valve's controller bumps the prices to $1128 and $1428 respectively. Interested buyers can sign up on Steam until June 25th for a randomized purchase lottery, with selected customers able to order starting June 29th.

The Steam Machine packs a 6-core AMD Zen 4 CPU running up to 4.8GHz and an AMD RDNA3 GPU with 28 compute units hitting 2.45GHz. It includes 16GB DDR5 memory (single-channel in one SO-DIMM), 8GB GDDR6 for graphics, and either 512GB or 2TB storage. The system supports M.2 upgrades and features a micro SD slot compatible with Steam Deck cards.

Valve first announced the Steam Machine in November but delayed launches due to memory supply issues. The pricing arrives shortly after a 44% Steam Deck price hike pushed the 1TB model to $949. Despite the steep costs, the Steam Machine competes unfavorably against the $900 PlayStation 5 Pro and $600 standard PS5, though it offers Linux flexibility that traditional consoles lack.

Consumers face a tough choice: pay premium prices for Valve's compact PC gaming solution or build a more powerful custom rig for less money. The mandatory Steam account requirement with prior purchase before April 27, 2026 adds another barrier to entry for new customers.
