SpaceX has announced its intention to build a mobile service network and enter the US telecommunications market, directly challenging established players like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The company recently acquired $19.6 billion worth of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar, totaling 65 MHz. These licenses include terrestrial components, which SpaceX plans to leverage for building a network and offering a genuine mobile service.

This move could potentially see SpaceX integrating its Starlink satellite network with ground-based infrastructure to provide extensive coverage across the United States. Following the announcement, shares of Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile experienced a decline of 2.2% to 4%.

Despite SpaceX's ambitions, some analysts express skepticism, noting the immense challenge of competing with companies that have spent decades building their infrastructure. They suggest it could take decades of substantial investment for SpaceX to capture a significant market share. An alternative path could involve an MVNO agreement, but SpaceX appears to have distinct strategies, hinting at "great and new ideas" to achieve its goals without disclosing specific details.
