Sony Ends PlayStation Disc Production in 2028, Goes Digital-Only

Sony confirmed that physical disc production for new PlayStation games ends in January 2028, making all future titles digital-only releases. The company says this shift reflects consumer preferences toward online purchases, following similar moves across the entertainment industry. Existing games and those releasing before the cutoff date will still get physical versions.

Physical media has long been central to console gaming, offering tangible ownership and the ability to share, resell, or trade games freely. Unlike digital copies, discs don't rely on platform availability or server support, letting players access their libraries even if Sony discontinues online services. This permanence appeals to collectors and those wary of digital storefront shutdowns.

The announcement coincides with Sony's decision to shutter the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, highlighting risks of digital-only libraries. While existing purchases remain downloadable for now, the company offers no long-term guarantees. Publishers have steadily moved away from physical releases, often shipping incomplete discs requiring online downloads anyway.

This transition eliminates used game sales and trading, forcing consumers to pay full price for every title. Sony becomes the first major console maker to fully abandon physical media, setting precedent for Microsoft and Nintendo's next platforms. The move prioritizes publisher revenue over consumer rights to true game ownership.
