MediaTek has refreshed its Dimensity 8500 chipset as the Dimensity 8550, adding significant AI capabilities for on-device processing. The main upgrade is LLM Booster support for Google's Gemini Nano V3, enabling local AI tasks without cloud connectivity. This positions MediaTek to compete with Qualcomm's AI-focused chips in the Android market.

Built on TSMC's 4nm N4P process, the chipset retains the NPU 880 for AI workloads. The octa-core CPU configuration includes one Cortex-A725 at up to 3.4GHz, three at 3.2GHz, and four at 2.2GHz. The Mali-G720 MC8 GPU powers 1440p+ displays at 144Hz refresh rates, while the ISP handles 4K video at 60fps with AV1 codec support.

Memory and storage get modern upgrades through LPDDR5X RAM at 9,600Mbps speeds and UFS 4 compatibility. Connectivity includes a 5G modem with dual SIM dual active support, plus Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. These specs target performance-oriented mid-range devices rather than flagship territory.

The Honor 600 Pro for China becomes the first smartphone to launch with this chipset. This rollout suggests MediaTek's strategy focuses on bringing advanced AI features to more affordable devices, potentially accelerating on-device AI adoption across Android's mid-tier segment.
