Huawei's FreeBuds Pro 5 represent the latest evolution in premium true wireless earbuds, focusing on refinement rather than revolution. After a week of testing, these earbuds deliver superb sound quality, potent active noise cancellation, and top-notch build quality that justifies their flagship positioning.

Design-wise, the FreeBuds Pro 5 maintain the familiar in-ear form factor with short stems and silicone ear tips, but feature subtle improvements. The buds are slightly more compact at 5.5 grams each, while the charging case remains similarly sized but lighter at 43 grams. A new circular LED status bar adds visual feedback, and the IP57 rating (upgraded from IP54) provides better water and dust resistance.

Performance shines with the dual-driver setup featuring an 11mm dynamic driver paired with a micro-planar tweeter. The audio profile offers a wide soundstage with bouncy bass, great instrumentation separation, and natural treble. Active noise cancellation has been significantly improved, now rated at 220% more effective than the previous generation. The buds support AAC, SBC, LDAC codecs, and Huawei's L2HC 5.0 protocol, though the high-bandwidth streaming requires specific Huawei devices.

While the sound quality leap from the Pro 4 isn't dramatic, the FreeBuds Pro 5 excel in comfort, ANC performance, and overall refinement. They represent a solid choice for users already in the Huawei ecosystem, though the ecosystem lock and modest upgrades may give some buyers pause.
