At MWC 2026, HMD unveiled plans to modernize its feature phone lineup with smartphone-like capabilities. The company announced it will bring AI assistants, video calling, and a digital wallet to under-connected users worldwide, starting with key markets like India in 2026.

HMD's digital wallet, developed with fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs, will enable secure remittances through local payment systems. The service launches in India in the first half of 2026 with device-level security and PIN protection. The company partnered with Sarvam AI to create a voice-activated assistant for basic tasks like making calls and setting alarms, plus simple AI chat capabilities.

Beyond standard features, HMD is piloting an AI companion for elderly users, co-developed with InTouch. This service will begin trial testing in Europe before a global rollout. The company is also introducing Xpress Chat, an app enabling video conferencing, voice messaging, group chats, and photo sharing through front-facing cameras. These updates represent HMD's strategy to bridge the digital divide by bringing modern connectivity to basic phone users.
