EU Forces Google to Open Android and Search

The European Commission (EC) has issued two legally binding Digital Markets Act (DMA) decisions compelling Google to open up Android and Search to competitors.

Firstly, Google must grant third-party AI assistants on Android access to crucial system features previously exclusive to Google's Gemini. This aims to level the playing field, as currently, 60% of EU Android users find third-party assistants less appealing due to feature limitations. These assistants will gain similar capabilities, including voice activation akin to "Hey Google," and the ability to perform actions like booking taxis or interacting with other apps. This requires access to location history, messages, and app interaction, with changes mandated by July 2027.

Secondly, Google is ordered to share anonymized Search data with eligible third-party search engines and AI chatbots. This initiative seeks to bolster competition by enabling rivals to enhance their search products using data equivalent to what Google uses for its own optimization. The anonymization process involves a multi-layered method developed with experts. Google can assess potential cybersecurity risks before sharing data. A fair pricing formula and a transparent access process have also been established. This data sharing mandate is to be implemented from January 2027.
