EU Battery Rule Exemptions for Wearables

The EU's upcoming legislation, effective February 2027, mandates user-replaceable batteries for electronic devices. However, the EU has introduced exemptions for certain categories, particularly "wet appliances" and devices where miniaturization poses a risk.

Wearable devices like smartwatches, fitness trackers, and wireless earbuds are now exempt if they are designed for use in wet environments or are intended to be washable. This also covers devices like electric toothbrushes and outdoor wireless speakers. Miniaturized devices may also be exempt if their tight internal packing makes battery removal by users dangerous, with replacement then requiring professional intervention.

While "user-replaceable" doesn't mean tool-free, it implies basic tools should suffice. Notably, phones meeting specific durability and battery longevity standards (IP67 rating, 83% capacity after 500 cycles or 80% after 1,000 cycles) can have batteries replaced only by professionals. The European Commission may introduce further exemptions based on future market and technological advancements.
