YouTube Cuts Affiliate Threshold to 500 Subscribers

YouTube has lowered the subscriber threshold for its Shopping affiliate program from 1,000 to 500, enabling creators to monetize content earlier in their careers. The change expands earning opportunities for smaller creators who previously needed to reach a higher subscriber count before participating in affiliate marketing.

The program, launched in 2022, allows creators to earn commissions when viewers purchase products tagged in their videos. It applies across YouTube Shorts, on-demand videos, and live content. Creators must still satisfy other YouTube Partner Program requirements to access these monetization features.

The timing appears strategic, coming just one day after Meta introduced shopping links to Reels. Facebook and Instagram creators can now reference up to 30 distinct products in a single video. YouTube's move directly responds to Meta's shopping capabilities, intensifying competition between platforms for creator monetization opportunities.
