Volkswagen Uses Sheep for Solar Farm Maintenance in Poland

Volkswagen has deployed 100 sheep to graze at the solar farm powering its manufacturing plant in Poznań, Poland, replacing traditional lawn maintenance with a dual-purpose approach.

The flock is part of an agrivoltaics research project led by Poznań University of Life Sciences, examining how grazing affects animal welfare, biodiversity, soil quality, vegetation, and site microclimate. Quanta Energy, which built the solar installation, documented the sheep in action.

"Today, the photovoltaic farm delivers much more than green electricity. It has also become a place that supports biodiversity, local agriculture, and scientific research," said Marzena Pillich-Grońska, director of Volkswagen Poznań. The initiative demonstrates industrial land use that combines energy generation with ecological benefits.

Agrivoltaics is gaining traction as a land-efficiency strategy, with prior experiments focusing on crops beneath panels. Integrating livestock offers a lower-maintenance alternative that could scale across industrial solar sites, reducing mowing costs and emissions while generating ecological data for future deployments.
