Venmo App Redesign Prioritizes Privacy

Venmo has redesigned its payment app with improved privacy settings by default. The popular money transfer service now welcomes new users with posts visible only to friends, addressing past privacy concerns that exposed public payment details. This marks a significant shift from the previous onboarding process.

Users can now choose "just me" visibility for maximum privacy, though it remains unclear if friend lists will also default to private. Beyond privacy, the redesigned app features a revamped feed with payment reactions, quick actions like "Pay Again" or "Say Thanks," and a new "Give a Shoutout" button to promote local businesses.

The Venmo redesign begins rolling out to users this week, with additional features arriving over the next few months before reaching full completion by fall. This privacy-focused overhaul comes after the service faced criticism for exposing sensitive information, including former President Joe Biden's friend list visibility in a 2018 report.
