UK MP Jess Asato sues xAI over Grok-generated explicit deepfakes

UK Labour MP Jess Asato has filed a High Court claim against xAI, alleging the company's Grok AI assistant produced sexually explicit images of her without consent. The lawsuit represents the first major test of whether AI companies can be held legally responsible for user-generated content in the UK. Asato claims Grok created images showing her in a bikini and an explicit video depicting chloroforming and sexual assault preparation.

Users began circulating these AI-generated images on X in January, shortly after reports emerged that Grok was used to create child sexual abuse material. Asato argues that xAI violated laws around misuse of private information and data protection, seeking financial damages and a court order requiring the company to comply with UK regulations. This case tests the boundaries of AI liability when platforms fail to prevent harmful content creation.

The controversy unfolds amid multiple investigations of xAI across the EU, UK, and California, plus additional lawsuits from Baltimore and others. SpaceX, which recently acquired both xAI and X, faces this legal turmoil while pursuing an IPO. Despite xAI's January claims of implementing safeguards, researchers found the restrictions were easily bypassed.

This lawsuit could establish precedent for how tech companies approach AI safety measures before deployment, rather than after harm occurs. Regulators and courts appear more likely to rein in Grok's capabilities than corporate leadership.
