Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that his administration is launching a Section 301 investigation into the European Union following fines against US companies. This action is in direct response to the EU's recent €890 million ($1 billion) penalty against Google.

Trump stated the investigation aims to reverse the EU's penalties and could result in "a substantial TARIFF," asserting that "The United States of America is not a 'PIGGYBANK' for Europe." The European Commission fined Google for violating the Digital Markets Act by unfairly promoting its own services in Google Search and restricting alternative payment options in the Google Play Store.

This move by the Trump administration utilizes Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, a mechanism that allows for investigations into trade partners and the imposition of tariffs on practices deemed to unfairly burden US commerce. This legal avenue has become a focus for the administration following the Supreme Court's decision on Trump's previous tariff regime. Similar to the EU's fines, Section 301 tariffs are also subject to legal challenges.
