Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on the EU in retaliation for fines levied against US tech companies. He stated on his Truth Social platform that his administration would launch a new tariff probe into the bloc for "ROBBING" American companies and taxpayers.

This threat follows the European Commission's €890mn fine against Google for breaching digital rules. Trump also referenced previous fines against Apple, Meta, and X (formerly Twitter), totaling €700mn and €120mn respectively. He vowed the EU would "pay a very big price" and that penalties would be reversed with substantial tariffs imposed.

These actions escalate existing transatlantic trade tensions. Trump previously indicated a 100 per cent tariff on imports from European countries implementing digital services taxes on American firms. Countries like the UK and France have introduced such levies, straining relations with Washington.
