Trump Banned Anthropic AI Hours Before Iran Strike

In a dramatic sequence of events, President Trump ordered federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's technology just hours before the US launched a major air attack on Iran with the company's AI tools. The president's February 27 post on Truth Social cited 'strong disagreements' between the Department of Defense and the AI company as the reason for the ban.

Despite the immediate ban, Trump allowed a six-month phase-out period for agencies like the Department of War still using Claude or other Anthropic products. This isn't the first military use of Anthropic's AI - the Wall Street Journal previously reported that Claude helped in the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro before his removal from office.

With the Department of Defense now pursuing deals with xAI and OpenAI for alternative AI models, the transition away from Anthropic's technology faces a significant challenge. The Wall Street Journal reports that replacing Claude with other AI systems could take months, leaving federal agencies in a complex position as they navigate both the ban and their existing AI dependencies.
