TikTok Accused of AI-Generated Racist Ads for Tunic Publisher

Indie publisher Finji has accused TikTok of using generative AI to alter advertisements for its games without permission. The publisher, known for titles like Tunic and Night in the Woods, discovered the modified ads after followers alerted them to inappropriate content. CEO Rebekah Saltsman approached TikTok to investigate after receiving screenshots of the altered advertisements.

TikTok's platform allegedly modified an ad for Usual June, depicting the protagonist with exaggerated sexualized features including a bikini bottom, impossibly large hips and thighs, and knee-high boots. This representation significantly differs from the character's actual appearance in the game. Finji maintains it had AI features turned off in its advertising settings, yet the platform still generated and ran these modified ads.

TikTok initially denied using AI-generated assets despite clear evidence, later admitting to the unauthorized modifications. The platform explained it used a "catalog ads format" combining carousel and video assets, claiming this approach helps advertisers "achieve better results with less effort." Finji expressed frustration with TikTok's response, stating they were "shocked by TikTok's complete lack of appropriate response" and have yet to receive a satisfactory explanation or apology for the reputational harm caused to their studio.
