Threads Crypto Scams Use MrBeast Spam to Evade Detection

Meta's Threads app is overrun with low-resolution screenshots depicting fake news stories about YouTuber MrBeast, a tactic employed by a massive crypto scam network. Security researcher Zach Edwards discovered that the operators behind these posts are running over 10,000 malicious crypto casino websites. These scammers leverage MrBeast's ubiquity to lure unsuspecting users into their schemes.

The spam posts avoid direct links, instead embedding obscure URLs within nonsensical phrases and fake newspaper clippings. This method, coupled with replying to popular Threads posts to maximize visibility, helps the scam network evade moderation and AI detection systems. Edwards suggests this approach is a form of A/B testing to determine the most effective content for algorithmic amplification on the platform.

The fake articles claim MrBeast is launching new promotions and giving away money, urging users to visit sketchy websites. Once there, users are presented with deposit bonuses and fake returns, designed to encourage quick deposits and credit card or crypto wallet connections. Malwarebytes notes MrBeast is now a frequently cited figure in online scams, surpassing even figures like Elon Musk.

While many of the scam domains see minimal traffic, the Threads posts themselves have garnered hundreds of thousands of views. The longevity and prevalence of this specific spam campaign raise questions about Meta's enforcement priorities. Scammers are actively testing new methods to exploit social media algorithms and user trust for financial gain.
