Switch eShop gets dark mode and native app upgrade

Nintendo rolled out a system update that finally gives the Switch eShop a dark‑mode option, syncing with the console’s theme setting. The same patch swaps the store’s web‑based frontend for a native app, cutting load times and making navigation feel noticeably quicker. Early tests show the change is most evident on older Switch units, especially for users who rely on handheld play during commutes.

The overhaul also adds security tweaks: users can now lock the eShop behind a four‑digit PIN lock and protect saved payment methods with the same code. Video playback in the store and News app gains skip‑forward/backward shortcuts, letting players jump ten seconds with ZL or ZR. These quality‑of‑life tweaks address long‑standing complaints from the community for gamers.

For owners of the original Switch, the refresh narrows the functional gap with the newer Switch 2, whose stronger hardware already makes the native eShop feel snappier. While the delay of nearly a decade drew criticism, the update delivers a tangible improvement that should ease daily browsing and purchasing for the remaining install base and could encourage longer session times.
