Saw: Genesis Revives Horror Franchise with Asymmetric Multiplayer Gameplay

Bloober Team and Anshar Studios unveiled Saw: Genesis at SGF 2026, a multiplayer horror game that finally gives the franchise genuine gameplay ambition. Unlike previous middling adaptations, this title pits one player as the Judge—a post-WWI Jigsaw Killer predecessor—against three Accused in a twisted game of survival.

The asymmetric setup borrows from Evolve and Dead by Daylight, with the Judge wielding traps, hidden passages, and hallucinogenic gas. Players can sacrifice body parts like hands or eyes to escape traps, adding gruesome strategic depth. Each 10-15 minute round features challenge rooms that test cooperation, with multiple paths to victory including killing the Judge or escaping entirely.

Lionsgate has approved Genesis as canon within the Saw universe, connecting it to the ten-movie narrative. The Judge's physical vulnerability creates tension—the killer can be overwhelmed if caught by armed Accused. This imbalance of power shifts dynamically as teams split focus or rush objectives.

Bloober Team's horror pedigree shines through in the body horror mechanics and psychological warfare. The game enters alpha testing soon with a Steam Early Access debut planned, though the real challenge will be managing demand for the Judge role when everyone wants to play the murderous mastermind.
