PS5X Emulator Runs PS5 Games on Xbox Series X

Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal demonstrated PS5X, an Xbox port of the open-source PS5 emulator Kyty PS5, running PlayStation 5 games on an Xbox Series X. In a September 8 YouTube video, he booted the PS5 version of Quake II using an Xbox controller. PS5X currently runs four PS5 titles—GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion and Quake II—but there is no public download yet.

The catch is that PS5X only works in the console's official Developer Mode, where Microsoft caps games at 5GB of memory. That rules out most current-gen games, since a retail Series X game normally receives 13.5GB of the console's 16GB. Uenal describes the project as early-stage research for running PS5 homebrew and game backups.

Because Sony and Microsoft use closely matched AMD hardware, Kyty PS5 acts more like a compatibility layer than a full hardware emulator. However, Xbox Developer Mode supports only DirectX 11 and 12, so Vulkan commands must be translated. Quake II reportedly runs at roughly 25 to 45 frames per second in Uenal's footage, though no PS5 exclusive has been demonstrated yet.
