PS5 Voice Chat Shows Who's Speaking Now

A September 16, 2026 PS5 system software update (version 26.06-14.00.00) adds an on-screen indicator showing who's speaking in party voice chat in real-time. The feature works on both regular PS5 and PS5 Pro, though it's not enabled by default. To use it, create or join a PlayStation party, open the Control Center, go to the Voice Chat card, select the three-dot More button, then Display Who's Speaking.

Turn on Display Names to see the speaker's name on screen, and adjust the Position so it doesn't cover important game elements. The setting can be turned off the same way. Sony notes the feature officially launched in the September update, though some users reported accessing it as early as November 2025.

The indicator also works with Discord on PS5, but not with in-game voice chat. PlayStation parties support up to 16 players, making speaker identification especially useful. Users can also adjust individual player volumes via the Voice Chat card.

Unlike Xbox's party overlay, PS5's speaker display lacks transparency and size customization options.
