PlayStation 5 Turns Into Linux Powerhouse via Mod

Andy Nguyen has dropped a Linux loader on GitHub that lets PlayStation 5 owners run the operating system on disc‑drive models with firmware 3.xx or 4.xx. The tool boots Linux from the console’s internal storage, turning the PS5 into a makeshift Steam Machine. Nguyen posted a demo video last month.

Linux has been gaining traction across gaming platforms, with Valve’s SteamOS and the French government’s switch from Windows sparking renewed interest. Nguyen’s mod echoes the old PlayStation III OtherOS feature that once let users install Linux, a capability that disappeared after Sony’s 3.21 firmware update in 2023 reboot campaign surge interest.

The loader supports only disc‑drive models, leaving SSD‑only units out of reach, and Nguyen notes he may add other firmware versions later but it’s not a priority. The project demonstrates hobbyist ingenuity and keeps the conversation alive about open‑source options on closed consoles for gamers and tech enthusiasts today again.

While the mod won’t replace a full Steam Machine, it offers a quick, low‑cost way for PS5 owners to experiment with Linux games and tools. The work also highlights Sony’s continued restrictions, reminding developers that platform openness remains a contested issue in gaming hardware for future innovations today and beyond.
